Authority refers to being an influencer, expert, or person of power in a particular field—someone whom others view as a credible source with deep knowledge in that area.
A Niche is a specialized market or target group with specific interests or needs.
Building Authority in a Niche can lead to new business opportunities or help existing businesses grow better.
In this article, I’ll share the Ultimate Guide with 9 steps to build Authority without needing a large following (just the right people) and without relying too heavily on other platforms (such as Social & Search Platforms).
I guarantee it’s easy to understand and simple to follow.
If you’re ready, let’s get reading!
9 Steps to Build Authority in Any Niche
1. Choose a Niche
Whether you already have a channel/business or not, choosing a Niche remains important.
For those without an existing channel/business:
I suggest that you don’t always need to follow your passion.
Although doing what you love helps provide motivation, if what you love isn’t in demand or doesn’t generate income, you’ll eventually burn out (unless you have other businesses or are already wealthy, and what you choose to do is truly just a hobby).
When thinking about which Niche to choose, I recommend placing the Niches you’re interested in within the Ikigai circle. Ikigai is a Japanese concept meaning “reason for being,” which comes from the intersection of four circles: what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.
Using Ikigai in choosing a Niche will help you find one that balances personal preference with business opportunity.
For those with an existing channel/business:
I’d like you to try writing down 3 keywords related to your channel/business that you want people to associate with you or your company first.
What makes a good Niche?
A good Niche must be small enough, able to differentiate, and competitive. A narrow Niche helps you target your audience clearly and reduces competition with large competitors. Choosing a specific Niche will help you create a distinctive and strong market position more easily.
Example: Content Shifu operates in the Technical & High-involvement Digital Marketing Niche, which is small enough to compete in while still offering substantial business opportunities.
Niches like travel or food are not considered good Niches because the topics are too broad and general. But if it’s a Niche like 6-star luxury travel or eating only exotic foods that people typically don’t eat, that’s considered an interesting Niche.
2. Select Your Audience
For this step, I recommend using the classic STP Framework:
S – Segmentation: How will we divide customers/followers?
T – Targeting: Which customer/follower groups are our priority?
P – Positioning: How are we different from other people/businesses?
Additionally, writing a User Persona (ideal follower) or Buyer Persona (ideal customer) helps because it gives you a clearer picture of the people you want to influence—what they look like, what they like, and what their goals are.
3. Conduct Research
In my opinion, the key to building good and sustainable “Authority” is focusing on creating evergreen content.
Evergreen topics typically relate to basic human needs such as wealth, health, happiness, relationships, self-improvement, and career. As long as humans remain human (with needs), these topics will continue to be of interest.
Using Keyword Research Tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest will help you know what people are interested in, what questions they have, what problems they face, or what they want to know.
4. Create Channels
For building Authority online, there are 3 main groups to focus on: 1. Website 2. Email List and 3. Social Media
Website – This is a crucial central point. I think everyone who wants to build Authority should view their Website as the “brain” or “heart”—the most important channel because I believe this channel is the most controllable and sustainable.
Email List – Email is a channel you own and can control as much as a website.
Social Media – This is a channel that helps you create Awareness and get people to see what you’re doing, but only for a short period. Although you don’t own these channels, having a good Social Media Presence is still very necessary.
Additionally, building Authority offline is important. Making yourself available to share and speak at Events or Conferences is another way to reach people.
The best method is to “be invited” to speak, not to “ask” to speak.
The better you do with the following steps, the more opportunities you’ll have to be invited to speak.
5. Create Content
As Bill Gates once immortalized with the phrase “Content is King”
Creating content is one of the most important things in building Authority because even if you have knowledge and ability, if you don’t express it, people won’t recognize and understand your expertise.
For current and future content creation, using AI will help you create content faster and more comprehensively. But the approach should be to combine AI Information with Human Experience.
AI has data, while you have experience. If you combine the strengths of both AI and yourself, your content will be even more interesting.
Like in this article, where I created the structure myself, let AI fill in the content, and then I revised all the content to make it cohesive.
“AI Information + Human Experience = Great Content”
6. Promote, Promote, Promote
Creating content that you’ve put effort into won’t benefit anyone if you don’t promote it for others to see.
The importance of promotion is making your quality content reach your target audience.
If you spend 2 hours creating content, I think you should spend at least an hour promoting your content.
Promotion can be done in various ways, such as using Owned Media like your website or blog, Earned Media that comes from sharing and user reviews, or even Paid Media where you advertise to increase reach and visibility.
I think focusing on creating content in formats you’re good at and releasing content through channels your target audience uses is important when starting out.
For example, if you’re good at writing, writing posts on Facebook or your Website is the way to go. But if you’re good at speaking, filming clips for TikTok or YouTube might be more suitable.
Whatever you’re good at, start with that so you’ll be comfortable doing it and can do it for a long time.
But if you’re not good at anything yet, my simple advice is to “practice.”
You’ve spent so much time creating content; it would be a shame if no one saw it.
7. Build a Following
There’s a saying: “The Money is in the list”
The more followers you have who appreciate the content you create, the more Authority (in what you do) you’ll have.
In step 4, I wrote about creating channels. In this step, I’ll write about building followers.
Besides creating quality content, the fastest way to build followers is through “Lead Generation.”
Lead Generation is like offering something valuable in exchange for something else.
For example, we provide Premium Resources for download (offering value) in exchange for contact information and following from interested people (receiving value in return).
8. Track and Measure
As the saying goes, “What gets measured gets improved.”
So don’t just create content and promote it without looking back to see what works and what doesn’t.
Analysis tools such as Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Google Search Console (GSC), Heatmapping Tools (like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity), or Native Analytics in Social Analytics are powerful tools that will help you better understand people who consume your content and interact with you.
9. Do it… Consistently
“Rome wasn’t built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour” (John Heywood)
It’s not unusual, and honestly, it’s very normal that when you first start trying to create content or build Authority, people won’t be interested, won’t follow, or won’t yet see the value in what you do.
Authority is about Trust, and building Trust takes time.
If you try to incorporate the content from all 8 previous steps I’ve recommended and keep doing it consistently, I believe that sooner or later, you will definitely have Authority in the area you want.
Conclusion
And these are the 9 steps to build Authority in any Niche.
Regardless of which field you want to build Authority in, I believe these 9 steps will sustainably create good results for you.
Finally, let me leave you with step 10, which is the most important technique:
Take
Action
Now
Good luck with building your Authority! :)
